What our Summer Students are saying
Jagmeet Grewal
Information Technology Student
What was the most useful thing you learnt?
While working at TasNetworks, I have learnt a lot about how the internet really works. I was fortunate enough that a colleague of mine was able to explain the different organisations and internet protocols that are involved in making sure that the internet works as expected.
What were your responsibilities in your role?
My main responsibility in the IT Infrastructure team was to complete service requests that were sent to our queue. The work needed to be completed as part of these requests varied greatly. I could be commissioning a new server, dealing with Phishing emails, creating admin accounts, making changes to the firewall or renewing certificates. I had the option to pick up any ticket that I wanted and I didn’t have to do the same thing over and over again which kept things interesting. The team works with many different technologies so there is tonnes to learn!
What opportunities has the program given you?
I was fortunate enough to have my contract extended after the internship program was finished. The team had enough work that needed to be done that I was able to work part-time while I finished off my degree. I was also offered some formal training for a particular system the team was running which has helped grow my own skills which will be applicable to any IT workplace I join.
Did you feel well supported as TasNetworks?
I felt very supported at TasNetworks. I wasn’t expected to know everything and everyone was always very willing to help. I have learned a lot more about computer systems and networking in the six months I have worked here than I have in 3 years of university.

Electrical Engineering Student
What was the most useful thing you learnt?
During my time at TasNetworks, I learnt a lot about the Protection and Control devices and what part they play in the network. This was very useful to me as I found that this wasn’t covered much while I was at university
What were your responsibilities in your role?
During the Summer Program I worked with the Protection and Control Team, this meant I was given a wide range of responsibilities and opportunities. Some of my responsibilities included settings changes for Protection relays and SCADA design work. In addition to this I had the opportunity to tag along with the Protection and Control field team for testing and commissioning tasks.
What opportunities has the program given you?
After completing the Summer Program I was fortunate enough to land an Honours Project for my final year of university. This enabled me to work alongside industry on up and coming technology for the power system. On top of this I found I had plenty of opportunity to further my knowledge while participating in the program, this in turn gave me exposure to the electricity industry and helped me understand how university theoretical knowledge can be implemented practically.
Did you feel well supported at TasNetworks?
I found the Program was very well supported during my time. In particular TasNetworks has a no stupid questions policy, which is great when you are new to the industry and you have one million questions. On top of this at the end of each week everyone in the program would meet up for presentations from around the business, I found this very useful in working out what each section of the business was responsible for and what opportunities were out there.
