Business customers

There’s never a convenient time to experience a power outage. To reduce the impact on your operations, here are some tips to keep your business running safely.

Before

  • Put together an emergency plan that you will follow in the event of an unplanned outage.
    • Identify essential business functions that rely on power, such as internet, EFTPOS machines, and fuel pumps. Plan backup options or manual solutions to keep them running during an outage.
    • Assign roles and responsibilities to employees for outage response.
    • Create a communication plan for employees, customers, and suppliers.
    • Keep a list of emergency contacts and customer support options.
    • Learn how to manually override electronic access to your business.
    • Put together an emergency kit and keep it somewhere easy to locate.
  • Prepare your people
    • Make sure your teams review procedures in case of an outage including continuing or stopping work, safety protocols and alternate evacuation routes if elevators are not working.
    • Conduct drills and training on power outage procedures.

Emergency kit

This list is a guide to get you started with your own emergency kit for a power outage.

Please consider your business needs and circumstances when preparing your own kit.

  • A battery-operated or wind-up radio
  • A torch or other source of battery operated lighting
  • Charged mobile phone and other electronic devices
  • Spare batteries and charging cables
  • Fully charged power bank(s)
  • First aid kit and any essential medications
  • Blankets and warm clothing
  • Bottled water and non-perishable food
  • Your emergency plan including contact phone numbers
  • Special items for babies, elderly, vulnerable people or animals
  • Ensure facility preparedness.
    • Help protect sensitive electrical and electronic equipment by switching them off and unplugging them.
    • Back up your computer files frequently or ensure the autosave function is on so that you do not lose any important work.
    • Install surge protectors to safeguard equipment.
    • Check fire safety and emergency lighting systems.
    • If possible, invest in backup power such as generators or battery systems. If you have backup battery or generator operation systems, check them regularly to ensure they are fully functional.

During

  • We understand that in the event of a planned outage on the network, you may need to keep your operations going by arranging an alternative source of power e.g. diesel generation.
    • TasNetworks does not provide or pay for generators during planned outages, and this extends to both life support and business customers.
    • If you need to hire a generator to maintain your supply, it would be at your own expense. You will need to organise the hire, transport, installation, connection and disconnection of the generator. Your electrical contractor can help you find a supplier, or you can check the ‘Generators’ section in the Yellow Pages.
    • If your business needs a constant power supply, we recommend installing an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system.
    • There are significant safety risks associated with the misuse of alternate power supplies for both yourself and our crews. For installation of any alternate power supply, work must be completed by a licensed electrical contractor in accordance with Australian Standards and legislative requirements. If you are considering the installation or use of an alternate power supply, please contract your nearest licensed electrical contractor and they will guide you through the process.
  • Listen to your local ABC Radio station on a battery-powered radio or the car radio for power restoration updates or stay in the loop by subscribing for updates below:

After

  • Restock and recharge batteries that you've used.
  • If you have solar panels, check your solar system has been restored after any planned or unplanned outage. Not all solar inverters switch back on automatically
