TasNetworks Threatened Bird Strategy
TasNetworks recently approved an updated version of its Threatened Bird Strategy. As well as committing the business to a sustained material reduction in our impact on Tasmania’s threatened birds, the updated strategy sets out our principles, priorities and objectives for the next 10 years.
Key priorities and commitments of our strategy
- Focus on making the distribution network inherently ‘bird safe’ by redesigning our overhead electricity infrastructure in high-strike risk locations
- Committing the business to a minimum spend of $1m p.a. on targeted bird mitigation measures over the next five years to reduce impact in the short term
- Targeting a long-term minimum 25% reduction in total incidents as a 10 year rolling average by 2032
- Ensuring that we make the network bird safe as we naturally replace and upgrade our electricity infrastructure
- Improving our understanding of strike-risk and bird behaviour to better target bird mitigation measures
- Encourage the reporting of suspected power line interactions
- Taking timely action to prevent repeat incidents
While significant progress has been made to date, with over 5% of high-risk distribution network now mitigated, the long-term success of the strategy depends on the collaboration, engagement and long-term commitment of all TasNetworks team members, our key stakeholders and customers to help protect these majestic birds now, and into the future.
